Symptoms Small brown spots start on the older leaves and grow into larger tan-brown blotches, sometimes with rings like a target. Where to plant next year

Crop rotation

Try not to grow cantaloupe or its relatives (cucumbers, melons, squash) in the same spot more than once every 3 years, and wait longer if you have had wilt or leaf disease. Moving them around the garden helps avoid a buildup of soil and debris diseases. Note that this does not stop bacterial wilt, which comes from beetles, not the soil. Clean up old vines at the end of the season too.Rotate cantaloupe and its cucurbit relatives on at least a 3 year cycle, and stretch it where Fusarium wilt or gummy stem blight are established, since the muskmelon wilt fungus persists in soil for years and the foliar diseases carry over on debris and seed. A long rotation is an important cultural defense, though it does not touch bacterial wilt, which arrives on beetles rather than from the soil. Clear and remove spent vines at season's end rather than tilling them in, which removes overwintering disease sites.
