About 1 inch a week

Most vegetables want roughly an inch of water a week, counting rain, and more when it is genuinely hot. An inch sounds like nothing until you measure it. Set an empty can under the sprinkler and stop when it fills, or water long enough that the soil is wet several inches down, not just darkened on top.The familiar one inch per week is a baseline, about 0.6 gallons per square foot, that real demand swings around with evapotranspiration (the combined loss to evaporation and the plant's own use). Hot, dry, windy stretches can nearly double crop water use; cool, humid, or overcast weeks cut it. Manage to the root zone rather than the calendar: wet the full effective rooting depth, 8 to 12 inches for most vegetables, on each irrigation, and let the upper profile draw down between waterings.

How often

Deep, not daily

Water deeply and less often instead of a little every day. Soak the soil six to ten inches down, then let the top dry before the next watering. That pulls roots down deep, where they ride out heat. Sandy soil drains fast and wants water about twice a week; clay and loam hold moisture and often need it just once. When in doubt, dig two inches down: dry means water, still damp means wait.Frequency follows your soil's water-holding capacity and the crop's rooting depth, not a fixed schedule. Sands hold roughly half an inch to an inch of plant-available water per foot and want smaller, more frequent applications; silt and clay loams hold 1.5 to 2.5 inches or more per foot and tolerate longer intervals. A good trigger is to irrigate when about half the available water in the active root zone is gone. On heavy soils, mind the infiltration rate: apply water faster than the soil can accept it and you get runoff, so cycle and soak in shorter bursts.

Water in the morning. Less is lost to evaporation, plants head into the heat of the day fully charged, and any splashed leaves dry by midday instead of staying wet overnight, which is how a lot of plant disease takes hold.Early morning is optimal. Low vapor-pressure deficit and calm air minimize evaporative and wind-drift losses, and any foliage that does get wet dries fast, shortening the leaf-wetness period that drives foliar disease. Evening overhead watering is the worst case: it leaves leaves wet overnight, which favors fungal and bacterial pathogens. If you have to water late, water at the soil.

Water the soil, not the plant. Wet foliage invites fungal disease, and much of the water that lands on leaves just evaporates. Aim at the root zone around the base, which is exactly where soaker hoses and drip lines do their best work.Deliver water to the root zone, not the canopy. Overhead irrigation wets foliage, which raises disease pressure and splash-disperses soilborne pathogens, and loses a meaningful fraction to interception and evaporation before it reaches the soil. Low-volume delivery at the base, drip or soaker, keeps leaves dry, cuts evaporative loss, and concentrates moisture where roots can use it, which also leaves the between-row soil dry and less hospitable to weeds.

In a heat wave or a container, the clock speeds up. Pots can dry out in a single summer day and may need water morning and evening. The cheapest way to water less often is mulch: a two to three inch layer over your beds keeps the soil cool and slows evaporation.Under high evaporative demand the intervals compress sharply, and containers are the extreme case: limited media volume and a high surface-to-volume ratio can force twice-daily irrigation in summer, and that frequent watering leaches nutrients, so feed accordingly. A 2 to 3 inch organic mulch is the highest-leverage move: it suppresses surface evaporation, moderates soil temperature, and buffers the wet-to-dry swings behind blossom-end rot and fruit cracking.

Containers, seedlings, small beds

A watering can or a wand on the hose. Best for pots, young seedlings, and spot-checking who is thirsty. The catch is consistency: hand watering is easy to skip and easy to do too shallowly, so make sure each plant gets a real soak, not a sprinkle.A can or a breaker wand on the hose. Unmatched for spot control, new transplants, containers, uneven demand, but application depth and uniformity depend entirely on operator discipline. The common failure is chronic under-application that trains shallow roots. Use it to supplement, not as the primary method for a full bed.

Rows and raised beds

A porous hose that weeps along its length. Run it through a bed, cover it with mulch, and it wets the root zone while keeping leaves dry. Tubing with emitters that drip water exactly where you want it. The most efficient option and the one you can put on a timer and walk away from. A bit more to set up, but it pays off across a whole garden, especially in a dry climate.Inline or point-source emitters at a known flow rate, commonly 0.5 to 1 gallon per hour. The highest application efficiency of any method and the most uniform when designed to pressure and run-length specs. Pair it with a pressure regulator and a filter, schedule by runtime-to-depth on a timer, and match emitter spacing to your soil: closer on sand, where the wetting pattern is narrow, wider on clay.

Patios and frequent travelers

Pots with a reservoir in the base that wicks moisture up to the roots.
