A sweet cherry is a fruit tree that drops its leaves each winter and gives firm, sweet cherries to eat fresh. It is the trickiest of the usual backyard fruit trees. Most sweet cherries cannot pollinate themselves, so unless you choose a self-fertile kind (like Stella, Lapins, or Sweetheart) you need a second, matching variety blooming nearby or you get no fruit at all. On top of that, the early flowers can be killed by late frost, rain just before harvest splits the cherries open, and birds love a ripe tree. The tree also needs a cold-enough winter to bloom well, so you pick a variety that fits your area. Give it a pollinator partner, a net, and the right spot, and it pays you back with cherries far better than the store. Sweet cherry is a deciduous stone-fruit tree (Prunus avium) grown for firm, sugar-rich fruit eaten fresh off the tree. It is the most demanding of the common backyard fruit trees: most cultivars are SELF-STERILE and need a second, compatible variety blooming at the same time to set any fruit (the self-fertile cultivars, such as Stella, Lapins, and Sweetheart, are the exception), it blooms early and loses crops to late frost, rain near harvest splits the fruit, and birds will strip a ripe tree in a day. It also needs enough winter chill to bloom evenly, so variety is matched to your winters. Trained to a central leader, kept netted, and given a compatible pollinizer, it rewards the effort with fruit no store can match.

Northern Tier, Zone 6. Winters bank about 800 to 1300 chill hours; these varieties need about 200 to 1100 chill hours. Zone 6 grows sweet cherries dependably. You can choose almost any variety. Most kinds need a lot, roughly 700 to 1,000 hours or more, which is why sweet cherry suits cold-winter areas. A few special low-chill kinds (Royal Lee and Minnie Royal, about 200 to 300 hours) were bred for mild-winter California and need only a little cold. If your winters are mild, you must choose a low-chill variety, or the flowers fall off without making fruit.Sweet cherries need a stretch of winter cold, counted as chill hours (hours between about 32°F and 45°F), to break dormancy and bloom evenly. A lone cherry (sweet) tree sets little or no fruit. Cherry (Sweet) flowers need pollen from a different variety, carried by bees, and the two trees have to bloom at the same time to trade it. Plant a second variety whose bloom window overlaps, within about 50 feet.

Bees do the work, so strong bee activity during the short bloom is essential for set.

Unlike peach, cherry rootstocks DO control tree size. Gisela 6 holds a sweet cherry to a pickable, nettable 15 to 18 feet, bears years sooner than a full-size Mazzard, and tolerates heavier soil; Gisela 5 dwarfs further (8 to 12 feet) for a patio or easily netted tree but needs careful crop-load management.

Sweet cherry grows best in a near-neutral soil, around pH 6.5 to 7.0, and is fine from about 6.0 to 7.5 (pH just measures how acidic or alkaline the soil is). Test your soil before planting and adjust slowly if needed: garden lime raises the pH if the soil is too acidic, and elemental sulfur lowers it if it is too alkaline.
