Not sure what soil you have? Grab a small handful of damp soil from your garden bed and squeeze it. If it crumbles apart easily, it's sandy. If it holds together but breaks when you poke it, it's loam (what most vegetables want). If it stays in a hard, slippery ball, it's clay.

It strongly prefers cabbage-family plants, especially in the South.The harlequin bug (Murgantia histrionica) is a true bug that specializes on cole crops, most damaging in the southern United States, where it completes several generations a year and overwinters as an adult in debris and weeds. Organic treatment Search out and crush the bugs, their barrel-shaped striped eggs, and the young ones by hand.
