Lime

The lime is an evergreen tree that grows in warm climates and gives tart, fragrant green fruit for much of the year. Limes are the citrus most easily hurt by cold, even more than lemons, so in most of the country people grow them in a pot and bring them indoors for winter. The common one is the seedless Persian (Tahiti) lime; the little, seedy Key (Mexican) lime is more aromatic but far more tender. The key thing to remember: pick limes while they are still green, not yellow. Lime (Citrus, chiefly Citrus latifolia and Citrus aurantifolia) is an evergreen subtropical tree grown for its tart, aromatic green fruit and near-continuous productivity in warm climates. Limes are the most cold-tender of the common citrus, more frost-sensitive than lemons, so outside the mildest zones they are grown in containers moved to shelter for winter. The mainstream choice is the seedless Persian (Tahiti) lime; the small, seedy, intensely aromatic Key (Mexican) lime is the tender specialty. Limes are everbearing, mature fruit fast (about 90 to 120 days from bloom), and are picked green, not yellow.

Will your winter be cold enough?

Limes do not need a cold winter to fruit. What they cannot handle is freezing, less than any other citrus. That is the thing to plan around.Limes are subtropical evergreens with essentially no winter chilling requirement (about 0 chill hours). They never go fully dormant, so bloom is triggered by warmth rather than by accumulated winter cold. Chill hours, the limiter for deciduous fruit like peaches and apples, are not what governs where a lime fruits; frost is, and limes have the least frost tolerance of the common citrus. One tree is usually enough

Most limes are self-fruitful: a single tree sets a full crop with its own pollen, so you don’t need a second variety to get fruit. Bees still move the pollen from blossom to blossom, so strong pollinator activity through bloom is what drives a heavy set.

The pollination rule

Bees like lime flowers, but you do not need to do anything. A lime tree sets fruit on its own, and a Persian lime even makes seedless fruit without any pollination.Lime flowers are fragrant and visited by honey bees, but the tree is self-fruitful and Persian lime is parthenocarpic (it sets seedless fruit without pollination), so pollinators improve set rather than being required. Recommended varieties

For most people the Persian (Tahiti) lime is the one to grow: it is the seedless grocery lime, a bit hardier, and easy in humid climates. Choose a Key (Mexican) lime if you want the aromatic little limes for key lime pie, but know it is seedy and the most frost-tender citrus, so it usually lives in a pot. Makrut lime is grown for its leaves for cooking.For nearly all home growers the Persian (Tahiti) lime is the choice: seedless, larger-fruited, everbearing, resistant to lime anthracnose, and the hardiest of the true limes, though still tender. The Key (Mexican) lime is the aromatic specialty behind key lime pie, but it is small-fruited, very seedy, disease-prone, and the most frost-tender citrus, so most growers keep it potted. Makrut (Kaffir) lime is grown for its cooking leaves rather than fruit, and the Australian finger lime is a chef's novelty. How big will it get?

At a retail nursery you usually take whatever industry-standard rootstock the tree is grafted on; it is rarely a choice. Where it is, sour orange is a broad default with good fruit quality and foot-rot resistance, though it is susceptible to tristeza in some combinations. On the deep sands and calcareous rocklands where limes are often grown, UF/IFAS favors rough lemon, Volkamer lemon, alemow, or Rangpur lime; on neutral-to-low-pH soils, Swingle citrumelo adds foot-rot and tristeza resistance and some cold tolerance. Key lime is often grown on its own roots from seed, cuttings, or air-layers rather than grafted. Note that scion choice matters less for a lime's cold hardiness than simply avoiding frost.

Within a few weeks you should see fresh new leaves. Make sure the soil has not slumped up over the graft union.New root activity and a first flush of leaves within a few weeks in warm soil; the canopy should hold firm rather than wilt. Watch that the graft union stays clear of soil as the mound settles.
Plant the tree a little high on a small mound, keeping the knobby graft union above the soil, and only once frost is fully past. You want the tree getting visibly bigger each season. As the little fruits grow, keep watering deeply and evenly so they do not drop, and keep feeding. Limes fill out fast, in about three to four months. Water deeply, then wait until the top inch or two of soil feels dry before watering again; do not keep the soil constantly wet. A new tree needs water every other day at first, then a couple times a week for the first months. An established tree in the ground needs water mainly during long dry spells. Check the soil with your finger instead of watering on a set schedule.Water deeply but let the top inch or two of soil dry between irrigations rather than keeping the root zone constantly wet. UF/IFAS suggests newly planted trees every other day for the first week, then once or twice a week for the first couple of months, tapering to watering only during prolonged dry spells for young trees and only during very prolonged dry periods for mature in-ground trees. When you water, give enough to soak the soil deeply through the whole root area, not just a splash on top. A good deep soak now and then beats a little water every day.Apply enough at each irrigation to wet the whole root zone to depth, then let it partially dry. Deep, thorough soakings encourage deep rooting; shallow, frequent sprinkles keep roots near the surface and leave the tree drought-prone.

Signs of trouble
Too much water
If the leaves turn yellow and stay yellow even after you water, or the soil never seems to dry out, you are likely watering too much. Soggy soil leads to root rot. Let the top of the soil dry before watering again.Persistently yellowing leaves that do not recover after watering, leaf drop, and a declining canopy point to overwatering and the foot and root rot it enables. Constantly saturated soil and standing water near the trunk are warning signs in themselves; soil that never dries between waterings is the underlying problem. UF/IFAS warns that overwatering makes limes decline or grow unthrifty.
Too little water
Leaves that wilt, curl, or look dull usually mean the tree is too dry, and it may drop flowers or little fruit when very thirsty. A quick droop on a very hot afternoon can be normal, but if watering does not perk it back up, look closer.Wilting or curling leaves, dull or cupped foliage, and, during stress, flower and young-fruit drop indicate the tree is too dry. Brief, recoverable midday wilt in extreme heat can be normal, but leaves that stay wilted after watering signal a watering problem rather than simple dryness.

Feeding late in the year pushes out soft new growth that frost can damage, and limes are the citrus most easily hurt by cold. If your soil is alkaline, the tree will also need iron and zinc so its leaves stay green. In alkaline (high-pH) soil, the tree also needs iron and zinc, often sold as chelated micronutrients, to keep the leaves green. Skip fertilizers heavy in phosphorus (the middle number).Nitrogen-forward; use a fertilizer formulated for citrus. Young citrus trees take a balanced citrus grade with part of the nitrogen from organic sources; bearing trees shift toward higher potassium and lower phosphorus. On alkaline or calcareous soils, supplement with chelated iron and nutritional sprays of manganese and zinc, and avoid phosphorus-heavy formulas, which worsen iron lockout.

Who grows well together

Companion planting

Keep grass and weeds away from under a lime tree, out to the edge of the branches. They steal water and food the tree needs, and a trimmer used against the trunk can wound the bark. Keep mulch a hand's width back from the trunk. You do not need a second tree for it to fruit. For a tree, companions really means root-zone management, not vegetable pairing. Keep lawn grass and weeds cleared out to the drip line: turf competes hard for water and nitrogen and slows a young lime, and string trimmers used to fight grass at the trunk nick the tender bark. Keep organic mulch pulled back at least a foot from the trunk to reduce Phytophthora foot-rot risk. Limes are self-fruitful, so no second tree is needed for pollination. UF/IFAS also cautions against heavy lawn fertilization and herbicide drift near citrus. What to expect

A grown lime tree produces a lot. A Persian lime builds from under ten pounds its first year to a couple hundred pounds when mature, while a smaller Key lime makes about 30 to 50 pounds a year. A tree in a pot will make less than a big tree in the ground.A mature Persian lime is a heavy producer: UF/IFAS yield tables run from roughly 8 to 10 pounds in year one up to 200 to 250 pounds by year six, with large old trees carrying several hundred pounds. A Key lime is a smaller tree, producing about 30 to 50 pounds a year at maturity. Yield depends strongly on tree size, age, variety, and climate; container trees bear proportionally less.

A lime hits its full output around year four to six and keeps producing for decades. The biggest harvest comes in summer, with some fruit on and off through the year.Trees reach full bearing from roughly the fourth to sixth year onward and, as evergreens in mild climates, carry a summer-weighted crop with scattered fruit much of the year. Room temp
Off the tree, limes last about a week on the counter before they yellow and dry out. Use them while they are still green and heavy. To keep a big pick, juice them and freeze the juice.Picked limes keep at room temperature for roughly a week, gradually yellowing, softening, and losing juice. Unlike lemons, limes are best used soon after picking; holding a large crop long term is done by juicing and freezing rather than by long storage.
Fridge
Limes do not like a cold fridge as much as lemons do. UC Davis recommends keeping them cool but not cold, around 50°F, because a very cold fridge for several weeks gives them pitted, brown skin. In a normal fridge, use them within a week or two.Limes are chilling-sensitive: UC Davis advises storing them at about 50°F to 55°F, warmer than most produce, since temperatures below 50°F for three weeks or more cause chilling injury (pitting and brown, sunken rind areas). Whole limes do not freeze well, but the juice and zest do. Next season Put the tree in the warmest spot you have, cover or wrap it on cold nights, and in a cold area keep it in a pot you can bring inside. The giveaway is foliage that yellows and wilts but does not recover after watering, separating it from drought stress. Next season Fix the drainage, clear soil and mulch from the base so the trunk can dry, and water less. What happened Yellow between the veins with green veins means the tree cannot get enough iron, manganese, or zinc, which happens a lot in alkaline soil. The nutrients are there, the tree just cannot absorb them, and soggy soil makes it worse.This interveinal pattern is micronutrient chlorosis, usually iron, manganese, or zinc, common where soil is alkaline or calcareous and those nutrients are chemically locked up. It is a soil-availability disorder, not a deficiency of the nutrient in the ground, and overwatering worsens uptake. Limes are frequently grown on exactly these high-pH soils. Next season Feed a citrus fertilizer with iron, manganese, and zinc, or a chelated iron product made for alkaline soil, and improve drainage. Symptoms The Asian citrus psyllid is a small brown insect that feeds on new growth with its back end tilted up. By itself it does little harm, but it spreads citrus greening, a fatal disease. It is a real problem in Florida and parts of the Gulf, California, Texas, and Arizona, and absent from most of the country.Tiny mottled-brown insects that feed on young flush at a tail-up angle, leaving a characteristic white, waxy, ribbon-like excretion and twisted, notched new leaves. The psyllid itself does limited feeding damage; its importance is entirely as the vector of Huanglongbing (citrus greening). It is a serious concern in Florida and parts of the Gulf, California, Texas, and Arizona, and is absent or under quarantine in much of the rest of the country. Cause The psyllid carries the greening germ from a sick tree to a healthy one while feeding on new leaves. Moving citrus plants between areas spreads it, which is why some states restrict carrying citrus around.The psyllid (Diaphorina citri) picks up the greening bacterium from an infected tree and injects it into healthy flush as it feeds. Moving citrus plant material across regions spreads both insect and disease, which is why citrus is quarantined in affected states. Organic treatment Spraying your own tree does little against the psyllid. What helps is spotting it early, reporting it, and removing a tree confirmed to have greening so it does not infect others.Backyard chemical control of ACP is of limited value and is best coordinated through regional area-wide programs, not tree by tree. The meaningful home action is early detection, reporting, and removing confirmed greening-infected trees to protect the area. Prevention If you live where the psyllid is present, buy certified healthy trees, do not bring citrus in from other areas, and tell your local extension office if you think you see it. Elsewhere, just do not import citrus from quarantine areas.Only where ACP is present: buy certified disease-free trees, never move citrus material across quarantine lines, inspect new flush for psyllids, and report suspected finds to your county extension or agricultural commissioner. Citrus leafminer

Symptoms Leafminer makes shiny, squiggly trails inside new leaves, and the leaves curl and look distorted. On limes it is worth watching because the damage opens the door to citrus canker, a disease limes catch easily.Silvery, winding tunnels just under the surface of young leaves, which curl and twist around the larva's path. Damage tracks each flush of soft foliage in the warm months. On limes it matters more than on many citrus because the wounds it leaves are entry points for citrus canker, to which limes are highly susceptible; on mature trees the leaf injury itself is largely cosmetic. Cause A tiny moth lays eggs on brand-new leaves and the caterpillar tunnels inside. It can only attack soft new growth, not older tough leaves.The larva of a small moth (Phyllocnistis citrella) feeds between the surfaces of tender new leaves; it cannot mine hardened mature leaves, so damage follows each flush. Organic treatment On an older tree, do nothing. On a young tree, coat the new growth with horticultural oil to discourage the moth, reapplying as fresh leaves appear. Avoid strong insecticides, which kill the helpful wasps.On mature trees, treatment is usually unnecessary. On young trees, a half-to-one-percent horticultural oil on emerging flush deters egg-laying and slows larvae; reapply as each new flush appears, since oil is short-lived. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides, which kill the parasitic wasps that attack leafminer. Prevention Do not over-fertilize or over-prune, which push out the tender new leaves the moth wants. Leave lightly mined leaves on the tree, since they still feed it. Keeping leafminer down also helps limit canker.Avoid heavy nitrogen and off-season pruning that push extra tender flush, so growth is synchronized and the vulnerable window is short. Do not strip mined leaves that are still green and working. Where canker is present, controlling leafminer also reduces canker entry wounds.
Brown citrus aphid and other aphids

Symptoms Aphids are tiny soft insects, often brown, green, or black, packed onto new leaves and buds so the growth curls up. You may also see stickiness, a black film, and ants.Clusters of soft green, brown, or black insects on new flush, flower buds, and the undersides of tender leaves, which curl and distort. Honeydew and black sooty mold often follow, along with ants. Aphids mainly trouble young trees and continuously flushing limes. Cause Aphids feed on the softest new growth. The brown citrus aphid can also carry a citrus virus, but spraying one tree does not stop that, so you treat only for the feeding damage.Several aphid species colonize new growth. The brown citrus aphid (Toxoptera citricida) is an efficient vector of citrus tristeza virus, though area-wide spread makes spraying a single backyard tree ineffective for virus prevention, so the reason to act is the feeding damage itself. Organic treatment Blast them off with a hose, or spray insecticidal soap if there are a lot. On an older tree you usually do not need to spray at all.A strong jet of water knocks colonies off tender shoots and is often enough. Insecticidal soap or horticultural oil handles heavier outbreaks on young trees; spraying an established tree is rarely warranted. Prevention Do not over-fertilize, since lots of soft growth invites aphids. Most of the time you can leave them alone; ladybugs and other helpers clean them up as the leaves toughen.Avoid pushing excess tender flush with heavy nitrogen. Tolerate low numbers: ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps usually bring aphids under control within a few weeks as the flush hardens off.
Scale insects

Symptoms Scale shows up as tiny crusty or waxy bumps stuck to twigs, leaves, and fruit. They do not move, so they look like part of the bark. Some kinds leave the leaves sticky, and a black film (sooty mold) grows on the stickiness.Small, immobile bumps along stems, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides, and on fruit: armored scales (including Florida red scale and snow scale, both noted on limes) sit as hard discs, while soft scales are rounder and shinier. Cause Scale are sap-sucking insects that build up fastest when ants are present, since ants chase off the helpful bugs that would eat them.Several armored and soft scale species suck sap from citrus. Populations build on crowded, dusty, or ant-tended trees, because ants protect scale from the predators and parasitic wasps that normally control it. Organic treatment Spray horticultural oil to coat the bumps, getting the undersides of leaves and the stems. Do not spray on a hot day (over about 95°F) or when the tree is dry and stressed, or it can burn the leaves.Horticultural oil smothers scale and is the standard backyard control; thorough coverage of stems and leaf undersides matters most. Do not spray oil above about 95°F or on a drought-stressed tree, as it can burn foliage. Repeat as new crawlers appear. Citrus red mite and rust mites

Symptoms Mites are almost too small to see, but they leave leaves and fruit looking dusty, speckled, or bronzed, sometimes with fine webbing. They get worse when the tree is hot, dusty, and dry.Fine stippling, bronzing, or a dull silvered cast on leaves and fruit, sometimes with faint webbing. Citrus red mite is most active from about November through June; rust mites russet the peel. Mites worsen in hot, dusty, water-stressed conditions and after broad-spectrum sprays kill their predators. Cause Mites are tiny relatives of spiders that feed on leaves and fruit. Dust and a dry, stressed tree make them multiply.Several mite species feed by puncturing leaf and rind cells. Dust, drought stress, and the loss of predatory mites to broad-spectrum insecticides all favor outbreaks. Organic treatment Spray the undersides of the leaves with water. For a bad case, use horticultural oil, but not on a hot day or a dry, stressed tree.A forceful water spray to the leaf undersides suppresses populations. Horticultural oil controls heavier infestations, with the same heat and drought-stress cautions as for scale. Prevention Water the tree properly and rinse dust off the leaves in dry weather. Like soft scale and aphids, mealybugs produce honeydew, so sticky foliage and sooty mold are common. Heavy populations cause leaf yellowing and premature fruit drop. Cause Mealybugs are sap-suckers that hide in tight spots on the tree. Ants protect them, so ant control matters here too.Mealybugs are sap-feeders that shelter in protected crevices and on fruit. As with scale, ant tending shields them from natural enemies and lets populations grow. Organic treatment Dab or spray the cottony clumps with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, and repeat, since their waxy coat sheds the spray.Spot-treat colonies with a cotton swab or a spray of insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, ensuring contact with the protected masses. Repeat, since the waxy coating sheds spray. Prevention Keep ants out of the tree and check new plants for cottony patches. Phytophthora foot rot, root rot, and gummosis

Symptoms This water-mold disease shows as sticky gum oozing from the lower trunk, dark soft bark near the ground, and a tree that slowly yellows and thins. A key clue: the leaves wilt and yellow but do not perk up when you water, which means rot rather than dryness.Oozing gum on the lower trunk and crown, dark, water-soaked or peeling bark near the soil line, and a slow decline with yellowing, thinning canopy when feeder roots are attacked. A telling sign is foliage that wilts and yellows but does not recover after watering, which separates it from ordinary drought stress. Limes are susceptible, and infection can extend up onto scaffold branches. Cause The disease lives in the soil and spreads in standing water. It takes hold when the ground stays soggy, when soil or mulch is piled against the trunk, or when the graft union is buried. Overwatering young trees is the most common cause.Soil-dwelling Phytophthora species (water molds, not true fungi) release swimming spores under wet conditions that splash onto the trunk or reach roots in saturated soil. Poor drainage, soil or mulch piled against the trunk, a buried graft union, and overwatering, especially of young trees, drive it. Organic treatment First fix the drainage or overwatering, or nothing else helps. For a gummy spot on the trunk, carefully cut the dark dead bark back to healthy bark and let it dry. A bad case in the roots is hard to cure, so prevention is what matters.Correct the water and soil problem first; recovery is impossible without it. For an active trunk canker, scrape dark diseased bark back to a margin of healthy greenish bark and let it dry; exposing a buried crown to air can halt spread. Severe root rot on an established tree is hard to reverse, which is why prevention carries the weight. Prevention Prevention is mostly about planting. Set the tree high on a little mound, keep the graft union well above the soil, make sure water drains away fast, keep mulch a hand's width back from the trunk, and do not aim water at the base. This is the most important disease to prevent up front.Design it out at planting: set the tree high on a raised mound with the graft union well above the soil and mulch line, provide sharp drainage, keep mulch pulled back a foot from the trunk, and never water the crown directly. A foot-rot-resistant rootstock adds protection. UF/IFAS also advises against wounding the trunk with mowers or trimmers.
Citrus canker

Symptoms Canker makes raised, rough, corky spots with a yellow ring on leaves and fruit, and the tree may drop leaves and fruit early. It is a regulated disease found mainly in Florida and the Gulf, so most growers elsewhere do not have to worry about it. Warm, wet, windy weather helps it spread.The bacterium (Xanthomonas citri, syn. X. campestris pv. citri) is spread by wind-driven rain, contaminated tools, and movement of infected plant material; it enters through pores and wounds, and leafminer damage increases susceptibility. Warm, wet, windy weather drives outbreaks. Organic treatment There is no cure once a tree has it, so the focus is on preventing spread. Copper sprays slow it and removing badly infected parts helps. Follow your local rules if you are in an affected area.There is no cure for an infected tree; management is preventive and regulatory. Copper protectants reduce spread and removing heavily infected material limits inoculum. Follow local regulatory guidance in affected regions. Prevention If you live where canker is present: handle the tree only when dry, clean your tools, keep leafminer down, and use a copper spray on new growth in the wet season. Lime anthracnose (withertip)

Symptoms This one mainly hits Key limes. It blights the flower buds and shoot tips (which wither and die back), spots the leaves, and makes young fruit fall off, so you get fewer limes. Persian (Tahiti) limes do not get it, which is one reason many people grow them instead.A disease essentially specific to Key lime: it blights flower buds and blossoms (withertip), kills shoot tips, spots leaves, and causes young fruit to drop, cutting production. UF/IFAS states Key lime is highly susceptible while Tahiti (Persian) lime appears to be immune, so choosing Persian lime sidesteps this problem entirely. Cause A fungus that attacks Key lime flowers, shoot tips, and young fruit in warm, wet weather. Persian limes are not affected.The fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides infects Key lime blossoms, shoots, and young fruit, especially in warm, wet, humid weather. Persian lime appears to be immune. Organic treatment On a Key lime, a copper spray during flushing and bloom is the usual treatment, along with good airflow and sun. A Persian lime needs no treatment for this.Copper fungicide timed to protect flushes and bloom is the accepted control on Key lime where pressure warrants; sanitation and full-sun, airy siting are the foundation. No treatment is needed on Persian lime. Prevention For Key lime in a humid area, give it full sun and airflow, water the ground rather than the leaves, and do not over-fertilize. The easiest fix is to grow a Persian lime, which does not get this disease.For Key lime in humid regions, plant in full sun with good air movement, avoid wetting the foliage during irrigation, and avoid pushing excess tender growth with heavy nitrogen. The simplest prevention is to grow Persian lime instead, since it appears to be immune.
Huanglongbing (HLB, citrus greening)

Once a tree has it, it cannot be cured.A bacterium (Candidatus Liberibacter species) that colonizes the tree's vascular system, transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid (see the ACP pest entry) and by grafting infected material. Once a tree is infected there is no recovery. Organic treatment There is no cure. The only real responses are controlling the psyllid, starting with healthy trees, and removing an infected tree.There is no treatment that cures HLB. Management is limited to vector control, clean stock, and removing infected trees. Research into tolerant varieties is ongoing but there is no home cure. Prevention This only matters where the psyllid lives. There, buy certified healthy trees, help control the psyllid, check your tree often, and remove a tree that is confirmed infected. Elsewhere, just do not bring in citrus from affected areas.Only relevant where the psyllid and disease are present: buy certified disease-free trees, support area-wide psyllid control, inspect regularly, and promptly remove confirmed infected trees. Where ACP is absent, the safeguard is not importing citrus from affected regions.
Greasy spot

Symptoms Greasy spot makes yellow blotches on top of the leaf and greasy dark patches underneath, and the tree drops those leaves early. It is mainly a humid-climate problem (Florida and the Gulf) in the rainy season, and dry-climate growers rarely see it.Yellow mottling on the upper leaf surface with corresponding greasy, brown to black blisters on the underside, leading to premature leaf drop, heaviest on the interior and lower canopy. It is primarily a warm, humid-region disease (Florida and the Gulf), most active in the rainy season from about May to September, and uncommon in arid citrus areas. Cause A fungus that grows on old fallen leaves and spreads in warm, wet, humid weather. Dry summers keep it from getting started.A fungus (Mycosphaerella citri) whose spores develop on decomposing fallen leaves and infect during warm, humid, wet weather. The long warm rainy season of the Southeast drives it; dry summers suppress it. Organic treatment A copper spray, sometimes with horticultural oil, is the usual treatment where it is a real problem, along with cleaning up fallen leaves. In a dry climate you usually do not need to treat it.Copper fungicide, alone or with horticultural oil, is the accepted control where pressure warrants; sanitation of fallen leaves remains the foundation. No treatment is generally needed in dry climates. Prevention Rake up and toss fallen leaves, since the fungus grows on them, and keep the inside of the tree open to air. In humid areas a copper spray in early summer helps prevent it.Rake up and remove fallen leaves to cut the spore source, improve air movement through the canopy, and avoid overhead wetting. In high-pressure humid regions, one or two copper or copper-plus-oil sprays timed to early summer are the standard preventive.
