Mandarin (Clementine)

The mandarin is an evergreen citrus tree that makes small, sweet, easy-to-peel fruit that is usually seedless. Its big advantage over other sweet citrus is that it takes cold better: satsuma is the hardiest common citrus, with grown trees handling a brief dip near 15 to 20°F, colder than an orange, so mandarins can be grown in the ground farther north (into zone 8) across the Gulf South and warm valleys. Satsumas also ripen early, so you usually pick the fruit before the coldest weather. Mandarins need less summer heat than an orange to get sweet, but they want cool fall nights to color up, so they struggle mainly in the warm-night tropics. Two things to know: seedless mandarins get seeds if another citrus pollinates them, so keep them apart to stay seedless; and they tend to make a big crop one year and a light one the next, which you even out by thinning. Unlike oranges, most mandarins do not keep well on the tree, so pick them when ripe. The trees are small, grafted (usually on trifoliate-orange rootstock for cold hardiness), and produce for many years. The mandarin (Citrus reticulata and its hybrids, including satsuma, clementine, and tangerine) is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree grown for small, sweet, loose-skinned, easy-to-peel fruit that is usually seedless. Its defining advantage over other sweet citrus is cold hardiness: satsuma is the most cold-tolerant of the commonly grown citrus, with mature trees withstanding brief lows near 15 to 20°F, notably colder than a navel orange, which lets in-ground mandarins reach zone 8 across the Gulf South and interior valleys. Early ripening (satsuma from fall) also gets the crop off the tree before the hardest winter cold. Mandarins need less summer heat than a navel to sweeten but want cool fall nights to color and drop acid, so they are marginal only in the cool-night tropics and the coolest coasts. Two group traits shape their care: seedless types set seeds if cross-pollinated by other citrus, so isolation preserves seedlessness; and mandarins are strongly alternate-bearing, managed by thinning heavy crops. Unlike a navel, most mandarins do not hold well on the tree and are picked promptly. Trees are small and grafted, usually on trifoliate-orange rootstock for cold hardiness, and productive for decades.

Will your winter be cold enough?

Mandarins do not need any winter chill to flower or fruit. Unlike peaches and apples, which need hundreds of cold hours in winter to wake up and set a crop, citrus is evergreen and is triggered to bloom by spring warmth and moisture instead. So chill hours, which matter a lot for deciduous fruit trees, simply do not apply to mandarins.Mandarins require no winter chilling to flower or fruit. They are evergreen and do not enter a chill-triggered dormancy; flowering is driven by spring warming and moisture rather than release from a prior cold period. This distinguishes citrus from deciduous fruit trees such as peaches and apples, which need hundreds of chill hours to break bud dormancy and set a normal crop.

The pollination rule

A mandarin makes fruit on its own, with no second tree and no bees needed, and most types are seedless when grown away from other citrus. Satsuma is naturally seedless. Clementine and some others are seedless by themselves, but if pollen from another citrus nearby reaches the flowers, the fruit ends up with seeds, so keeping a seedless mandarin away from other pollen-making citrus is what keeps it seedless.Most mandarins set a full crop on a single tree and are seedless when grown in isolation. Satsuma is parthenocarpic and reliably seedless. Clementine and W. Murcott are self-incompatible but facultatively parthenocarpic: they set seedless fruit on their own, yet fertile pollen from another nearby citrus cross-pollinates them and puts seeds into the fruit, and citrus pollen can travel a long way, so isolation from pollen-bearing citrus is what keeps seedless types seedless. A few mandarin hybrids fruit better with a compatible pollinizer, but the common seedless mandarins need no pollinizer and no bees for a single tree to fruit.

Mandarins come in many easy-peel, mostly seedless types that ripen from fall through spring depending on variety. Satsuma is the earliest and the toughest in cold. Clementine is the classic snack mandarin. Late types like Gold Nugget, Pixie, and Tango stretch the season into spring. Two things to know: many mandarins are seedless only if kept away from other citrus, and most tend to bear a big crop one year and a small one the next, which you can even out by thinning the heavy year.Mandarins (Citrus reticulata and its hybrids) span a long season by variety. How big will it get?

Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) is the preferred rootstock for mandarins, especially satsuma, because it gives the greatest cold hardiness and good fruit quality, which is why satsuma on trifoliate can be grown in the ground in zone 8. For containers and small spaces, Flying Dragon (a dwarfing trifoliate selection) makes a compact tree and is the most cold-hardy of all. In warmer regions, Swingle citrumelo suits wetter soils. Ask the nursery which rootstock the tree is on and match it to your soil, space, and winter cold.

Over the next few weeks you should see new leaves pushing out. Check that the soil has not settled up over the graft union.Expect roots to work and a first push of new leaves over the coming weeks once the soil warms, with the canopy staying firm. Watch the mound as it settles so the graft union does not end up buried.
Plant the tree slightly raised on a low mound with the knobby graft union above the soil. Soak it in well and keep mulch off the trunk. You want the tree getting bigger each year, with new branches and a fuller canopy. A few late types like Gold Nugget and Pixie do hold on the tree into spring.Harvest by taste and pick promptly. Mandarins like soil that is slightly acidic, around pH 6.0 to 6.5. The main thing to watch is alkaline (high pH) soil, common in the desert and inland West, where the tree cannot take up iron and zinc and the leaves yellow while the veins stay green. If that happens, use a citrus fertilizer that includes iron and zinc, and over time add sulfur to make the soil a little more acidic.Mandarins prefer a slightly acidic soil, roughly pH 6.0 to 6.5, and tolerate a somewhat wider band. The practical problem is high-pH alkaline soil (common in the desert Southwest and interior West), where iron and zinc become chemically unavailable and the tree shows interveinal chlorosis even though the nutrients are present. Companion planting

Keep grass and lawn out from under a mandarin tree, since grass steals the water and food the tree's shallow roots need. A ring of mulch, kept back from the trunk, beats grass growing right up to the tree. There is little real benefit to planting things close around citrus. Keep turf and lawn grasses out of the root zone. Grass competes hard for water and nutrients in the shallow layer where citrus feeder roots concentrate, and mowers damage the trunk. A mulched, grass-free basin out to the canopy dripline is the standard recommendation for all citrus, mandarins included. Low, shallow-rooted covers or a cool-season legume kept outside the trunk flare add living mulch without root competition. Mandarins fruit on a single tree, so no pollinizer companion is required; in fact nearby pollen-bearing citrus can put seeds into otherwise seedless fruit.

Pick mandarins by taste, not just by color, and do not leave them on the tree too long. Crop rotation

Rotation does not apply to a permanent tree like a mandarin. The one thing to know: if you remove an old citrus tree, avoid planting a replacement in the identical spot, since the old root zone can harbor pathogens and depleted soil that stress a new tree. Give a replacement a fresh location a few feet away if you can.Rotation is not applicable to a permanent tree crop.
