Most plums are self-fruitful: a single tree sets a full crop with its own pollen, so you don’t need a second variety to get fruit. Bees still move the pollen from blossom to blossom, so strong pollinator activity through bloom is what drives a heavy set.

Plum grows best in slightly acidic soil, around pH 6.0 to 6.5, and is fine up to about 7.0 (pH is just a measure of how acidic or alkaline the soil is). Test your soil before planting and adjust slowly if you need to: garden lime raises the pH if the soil is too acidic, and elemental sulfur lowers it if the soil is too alkaline.
