Young plants handle a light frost, but once summer heat and long days arrive it bolts, sending up a tall flower stalk that can reach 3 to 5 feet, and leaf growth slows. So the trick is to grow it for leaves in the cooler parts of the year, spring and again in late summer for fall, and to let the summer plants flower for seed heads. Sow a little every 2 to 3 weeks, since each plant bolts after a while, and plant the seeds right in the garden because dill does not like being moved. Containers and raised beds

If amending your soil sounds like too much work, or if your soil is heavy clay, full of rocks, or contaminated, build over it. A raised bed at least 12 inches deep filled with a 50/50 mix of compost and sandy loam gives you ideal growing soil with no battles. A 5-gallon container with quality potting mix does the same for one plant at a time. Both bypass your native soil entirely.

They can strip a young plant, but on an established dill they usually do only light damage.Larvae of the black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), banded green, black, and yellow, feed on the foliage. On an established dill the defoliation is usually light and cosmetic; a heavy load can strip a seedling. Cause These are the caterpillars of the black swallowtail butterfly, which lays eggs on dill and other carrot-family plants. They are also a welcome garden visitor, since they turn into a beautiful butterfly.Dill is a larval host plant for the black swallowtail butterfly. The caterpillars are a feature as much as a pest, so dill is often planted deliberately to support them. Organic treatment On a big plant, just leave them; the damage is minor and you get butterflies. If they threaten a small planting, pick them off by hand and move them to a spare dill plant.On established plants, tolerate them, the feeding is minor and the butterflies are a benefit; on small plantings, handpick and relocate to a sacrificial dill. Bt is effective if control is truly needed, but is rarely warranted on a host plant grown partly for the butterflies. Prevention Grow a little extra dill so there is enough to share with the caterpillars, and simply relocate them rather than spraying.Manage by tolerance and a little surplus planting rather than control: grow enough dill to share, relocate larvae from plants you want to protect, and reserve sprays for genuine seedling threats.

Where to plant next year

Crop rotation

Try not to grow dill or other carrot-family plants (carrots, parsley, cilantro, fennel, celery) in the same spot more than about once every 3 years, since they share pests and diseases. Plant dill after peas, beans, cabbage, onions, or tomatoes instead. Dill self-sows a lot, so pull up stray seedlings that pop up where you do not want them.Rotate dill and its carrot-family relatives so they do not return to the same ground for about 3 years. The Apiaceae share foliar blights, the carrot motley dwarf complex, and soilborne rots, which build up where the family repeats. Follow dill with legumes, brassicas, alliums, or nightshades. Because dill self-sows heavily from bolted plants, volunteers can blur a rotation, so pull seedlings that come up out of place if you are managing the family carefully.
